Crate vs Etsy

Etsy is a marketplace and Crate is a store you own. That is not a feature difference, it is a different relationship with your customers, and most sellers who succeed end up wanting both.

What Etsy is: A marketplace for handmade, vintage and craft goods that brings its own shopping audience.

Should I sell on Etsy or on my own store?

Etsy is a marketplace: it brings you buyers who are already shopping, and in exchange it owns the relationship with them, sets the rules, shows your listing next to a competitor's, and can change any of that without asking. Crate is a store you own: nobody sends you traffic, and in exchange the customer list, the pricing, the branding, the email and the rules are yours. The two are not really alternatives. The common and sensible pattern is to keep the marketplace listing for discovery while building an owned store for repeat customers, because a repeat customer bought from you rather than from the marketplace, and repeat customers are where the margin is.

Side by side

Qualitative and stable. No prices and no fee percentages for either side, because both change without notice and a comparison table carrying a stale number is worse than no table.

Crate compared with Etsy, by dimension.
What Crate Etsy
Who owns the customer You. The list, the emails and the repeat purchase are yours. The marketplace. You get an order, not usually a relationship.
Who brings the traffic You do, through your socials, your chat list and search. The marketplace does, which is its single biggest advantage.
Competitors on your page None. It is your store. Yours sits next to similar listings by design.
Branding Entirely yours, domain included. Within the marketplace's frame.
Rules changing under you Your store, your rules. Policy, fees and ranking are set by the marketplace and can change.
Fees A plan you can read in full on the pricing page. Listing and transaction fees set by the marketplace.
Selling in chat and on social Built in, sharing one catalog and one stock count. Outside the marketplace.

Which one you actually want

Both columns are real. If the right-hand one describes you, take it: a product that does not fit you is a refund with extra steps.

Choose Crate if

  • You have repeat customers and want to reach them directly.
  • Your brand matters and you do not want it inside somebody else's frame.
  • You want the customer list, the email addresses and the right to use them.
  • You already get orders through Instagram or WhatsApp and want them handled properly.

Choose Etsy if

  • You are starting with no audience at all, and marketplace discovery is worth the fees.
  • What you sell is squarely within the categories that marketplace's shoppers browse.
  • You do not want to do any marketing yourself.
  • You are testing whether a product sells before investing in a store.

Where Crate is behind

Every comparison on this site carries this section. A page that only lists what we do better is an advert, and you already know how much to trust one of those.

Where Crate is behind: demand. Etsy brings buyers. Crate does not, and nothing on this page should suggest otherwise. A storefront on your own domain starts with the audience you already have, and building more of one is work you do. That is the honest cost of owning the customer relationship, and it is the reason many sellers run both rather than choosing.

Already on Etsy?

You do not have to leave Etsy to start owning your customers. This page covers bringing your listings across, and why running both for a while is the sensible version of this move.

About switching to Crate from Etsy

Short answers, and none of them hedge. If yours is not here, ask us on the contact page.

Can I run Etsy and Crate at the same time?

Yes, and most sellers should for a while. Keep the listings that bring discovery, and send repeat customers to a store you own.

Can I import my Etsy listings?

Yes. Etsy's own data export produces a CSV of your listings that Crate imports, and the migration guide covers the fields that need attention.

How this comparison is kept honest

Last checked

Everything said about Etsy here is a qualitative property of the product taken from what Etsy publishes about itself: what kind of product it is, which channels it sells through natively, and which capabilities it ships rather than leaves to an add-on. We publish no prices, fees, percentages or counts for any competitor, including ourselves, on these pages, because those change without notice and a table carrying a stale number does more damage than no table.

Claims about Crate on this page do not go beyond what our own feature, pricing and security pages already state. Where they would, they are not made.

Product capabilities change. This page states what was accurate on the date above and nothing beyond it. If a row is out of date, we would rather hear it than rank on it.

Report something out of date

Etsy and any related marks belong to their owner. Crate is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by them, and naming a product here is nominative reference so that you can find this page and read it, nothing more.

This is our own assessment, made from publicly available information about both products on the date shown, and it compares the two on the same dimensions rather than on dimensions chosen to flatter us.

Nothing on this page is legal, tax or financial advice.
